The Tapilo Wreck sits off Cebu’s northern tip, in the same stretch of water that put Malapascua and Daanbantayan on the international dive map — waters known first for Monad Shoal’s resident thresher sharks, with wreck sites like this one filling out the area’s reputation as a serious dive base. The hull has been down long enough to function as an artificial reef: coral has colonized the structure, and the fish life that follows coral growth has moved in with it.
Depth and current conditions here call for a guide who knows the site, not a first dive of the trip. Local dive shops out of Malapascua run trips to Tapilo as part of a wider circuit that usually includes Gato Island and the shoal.
- Coral growth and reef fish now cover much of the hull — expect a living structure, not a bare wreck.
- Currents can run strong; dive with a local guide who knows the site’s conditions.
- Bring a camera for the contrast between the rusted hull and what’s grown over it.
