Daanbantayan is a municipality at the northern tip of Cebu island, 136 kilometres from Cebu City, with the Visayan Sea to the north, the Camotes Sea to the east, Bantayan Island across the water to the west, and Medellin to the south. The name combines the Cebuano daan (“old”) and bantayan (“lookout place”) — the original townsite is thought to have sat on high ground near Punta in Tapilon, where a watchtower once watched the sea for Moro raiders. Fishing and tourism anchor the coastal economy, and for most travellers the town functions as one thing above all: the mainland gateway to Malapascua Island.
The town’s real draw is its offshore territory. Divers transit through Maya port in barangay Maya to reach Malapascua and, beyond it, Monad Shoal — a 20-metre-deep seamount where thresher sharks that normally live far deeper can be seen at recreational depth, one of the few reliable places in the world for it. Farther out, Gato Island rises about 83 metres some 15 kilometres from Malapascua, holding soft-coral canyons, nesting seabirds, a flying-fox colony, and the rare nudibranchs macro photographers prize; closer islets include Chocolate, Maria, and the 175-hectare Carnaza, a barangay with its own population. On land, the poblacion holds the Santa Rosa de Lima Church (finished 1886) and the historic town plaza, and the Haladaya Festival (21–30 August) honours Datu Daya, the town’s legendary founder.
Daanbantayan suits divers and island-hoppers who treat it as a base — the port, the operators, and the bus links all sit here while the experiences are spread across the water. It doesn’t suit anyone expecting the attractions to be on the mainland; the town is the doorway, not the room.
What’s here, briefly
- Maya port — the jump-off on the northern coast for the short crossing to Malapascua and the boats to the outer islets.
- Malapascua Island and Monad Shoal — Bounty Beach and the dawn thresher-shark dives, reached from Maya.
- Gato Island — a rocky islet ~15 km out with soft-coral canyons, seabirds, a flying-fox colony, and sea snakes.
- The outer islets — Carnaza (175 ha), Maria, and Chocolate, reached by local banca from the northern coast.
- Poblacion heritage — the Santa Rosa de Lima Church (finished 1886), the 1916 municipal hall, and the historic plaza.

How to get to Daanbantayan
Ceres bus from Cebu North Bus Terminal
Daanbantayan is reached overland — Ceres Liner, White Stallion Express, and Cebu Autobus run regular service from Cebu City’s North Bus Terminal to the town, terminating near the northern coast. From there, a tricycle connects to Maya port in barangay Maya, the jump-off for boats crossing the shallow strait to Malapascua Island; outbound bancas to Gato, Carnaza, and the smaller islets also leave from the northern coast. Allow most of a day for the Cebu City–Maya–Malapascua trip one-way.
Getting around and onward
Within the town, jeepneys, tricycles, and trisikads handle local trips. Travellers heading west to Bantayan Island typically backtrack south to Hagnaya port in San Remigio for the regular ferry rather than crossing directly. Treat Maya as a transit hub, not the destination — plan your bus arrival to leave daylight for the crossing.
What to do in Daanbantayan
Cross to Malapascua and dive Monad Shoal
Malapascua sits across a shallow strait from the tip, known for Bounty Beach and for diving; Monad Shoal is the reason it became an established dive destination, with early-morning dives the standard way to see thresher sharks at recreational depth. Book diving through Malapascua operators rather than expecting full dive infrastructure on the mainland, and note that an overnight on the island makes the dawn dives practical.
Boat to Gato Island and the outer islets
Gato, about 15 kilometres from Malapascua, offers soft-coral canyons, a sea-snake population, nesting seabirds, a flying-fox colony, and nudibranchs. Carnaza (175 ha), Maria, and Chocolate islets lie north of the mainland, reached by local banca — a day of island-hopping in the Visayan Sea.
The poblacion and the Haladaya Festival
On land, the Santa Rosa de Lima Church (finished 1886) and the historic town plaza — the site of an 1898 battle — sit in the poblacion. The Haladaya Festival (21–30 August) is the town’s main cultural event, honouring the founder Datu Daya. Note that the church was damaged in the 2025 Cebu earthquake, so confirm its status before visiting.
Where to stay in Daanbantayan
Most travellers here overnight on Malapascua rather than the mainland — the island holds the dive resorts and the beach, and the dawn Monad Shoal dives make staying across the strait the practical choice. Mainland Daanbantayan has limited rooms geared to transit. For the island’s dive-and-beach supply, see the best dive resorts in Malapascua.
Practical realities
Payment: cash. Smaller barangays and island operators may not accept cards, and ATM availability on the islets is not reliable — withdraw before heading out.
Connectivity: workable in the poblacion and around Maya; patchier on the outer islets.
Timing: the January–April dry window brings the calmest seas for the boat crossings; Monad Shoal thresher diving runs year-round but is weather-dependent on the Maya crossing. The June–October wet months bring the most rainy days and rougher water.
Note: the Santa Rosa de Lima Church was damaged in the 30 September 2025 Cebu earthquake; confirm its status and any wider local impact before travel.
