The Malapascua Thresher Shark Diving tour is an internationally renowned, deep-water marine excursion situated off the northern tip of Cebu. It is specifically designed for certified scuba divers, marine photographers, and underwater naturalists looking to experience top-rated pelagic encounters.
Malapascua Island is famous globally because it is the only known place in the world where you can dive with shy, pelagic thresher sharks on a daily basis.
Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the tour’s key dive sites and logistics:
Key Destinations and Highlights
- Monad Shoal & Kimud Shoal: These sunken islands serve as the primary deep-water cleaning stations where the magnificent thresher sharks—known for their superb, whip-like tails—approach the shallows to be cleaned by wrasse. Kimud Shoal is also known for rare sightings of hammerhead sharks between December and May.
- Gato Island: A short boat ride away, this marine reserve features a 30-meter-long underwater tunnel that cuts entirely through the island. It is famous for guaranteed sightings of resting white-tip reef sharks, banded sea kraits (sea snakes), and a plethora of macro critters like cuttlefish and seahorses.
- Bounty Beach: Serving as the island’s main commercial hub, this stretch of fine white sand is where visitors spend their surface intervals, offering a relaxed, native island atmosphere filled with dive shops and local gastronomy.
- Wreck Dives: Advanced divers can also explore nearby sunken WWII Japanese cargo vessels, such as the Tapilo, or the 100-meter passenger ferry Dona Marilyn, which are now completely overgrown with black corals and teeming with stingrays.
Tour Logistics and Practical Tips
- Schedule and Transportation: The trip to Malapascua requires a roughly 4-hour overland drive north from Cebu City or Mactan Airport to Maya Port in Daanbantayan, followed by a 45-minute outrigger boat ride across the Visayan Sea to reach the island. Because the sharks are best seen at dawn, dives at Monad Shoal usually happen very early in the morning.
- Skill Level and Restrictions: This circuit is classified as “Hard”. Because the shoals and wrecks are deep and can experience medium to strong currents, it is highly recommended (and sometimes mandatory) that participants hold an Advanced Open Water certification.
- Strict Diving Rules: To protect the sensitive marine life, the use of camera strobes and flashlights is strictly prohibited at locations where thresher sharks are present. Additionally, the use of reef hooks is banned at both Monad and Kimud Shoals.
- Peak Season: While diving is available year-round, the optimal window for this route is during the dry Amihan season from November to May.
- Fees: Environmental surcharges and marine park fees are strictly enforced by the local government to establish and maintain the protected habitats around the shoals.
