A 3-star beachfront resort set in a garden compound at Bounty Beachfront, Barangay Logon, on the south side of Malapascua Island off Daanbantayan — on the dive island itself, not the mainland jump-off. Older listings and long-time guests still refer to the property by its original name, Mike and Diose’s, a holdover from before “AABANA” became the marketed brand — one of a handful of Malapascua properties that predate the resort boom the island’s thresher sharks eventually built. Rooms run to family and interconnected layouts with private bathrooms, air-conditioning, and balconies; a family-friendly restaurant serves German, local, and barbecue dishes with outdoor and picnic seating. Watersports, scuba diving, and yoga and fitness classes anchor the activity side, and a paid shuttle handles airport transfers. Reaching it means the boat crossing from Maya Port, a few steps from Bounty Beach once ashore.
Rooms are functional rather than styled — private bathroom, air-conditioning plus a fan, a balcony, and enough floor space for family or interconnected configurations aimed at groups traveling together rather than couples chasing a view. That plainness carries through to the dining setup: the restaurant is an open, covered space with a sand floor and plastic outdoor seating rather than anything resembling a formal dining room, and it works better as a place to eat well than to linger over ambiance. The German, local, and barbecue menu reflects the mixed nationalities that built Malapascua’s dive scene from the 1990s onward, and the breakfast in particular gets singled out by returning guests — a wide spread, eaten with a direct water view, with the resort’s banana pancakes coming up often enough in guest feedback to count as something of a house specialty.
Guest opinion on AABANA runs more mixed than the average Bounty Beach property, and that’s worth stating plainly rather than glossing over. Reviewers who come for the beach access and the price point tend to rate it well — a private stretch of sand, friendly staff, and a genuinely relaxed compound come up repeatedly. Others report a property showing its age: worn furnishings, patchy upkeep, and photos on booking sites that oversell the current state of things. Neither read is wrong; it’s an older, lived-in resort rather than a recently built one, and it prices and presents itself accordingly. Anyone choosing AABANA for the location and the watersports access rather than for polish is likely to come away satisfied; anyone expecting a newly renovated property should look elsewhere on the strip.
The location itself does most of the selling. The resort sits at the eastern end of Bounty Beach, fronting Barangay Pasil — a stretch still known locally as a boat-building community, where outrigger hulls get shaped and repaired on the sand a short walk from AABANA’s own dive boats and watersports gear. That’s a different neighbor than the bar-and-restaurant cluster further along the strip: staying at this end trades a bit of nightlife proximity for a quieter stretch of beach and a closer look at one of the island’s older working trades. Logon Beach, the island’s main boat landing, is roughly a twelve-minute walk away, useful for anyone tracking the morning dive-boat traffic heading out to Monad Shoal or simply wanting a change of scenery for a meal. On-site, the activity list covers most of what draws people to this side of the island: scuba diving, fishing trips, canoeing, general watersports, and yoga or fitness sessions for the non-diving hours. A paid shuttle handles the airport run, a useful option given Mactan-Cebu International Airport sits roughly 85 miles south — a multi-hour trip by road that most guests would rather not manage independently after a flight.
Staying here also means staying inside the economy that Monad Shoal built. Close to four out of five pesos earned on Malapascua trace back to diving in some form, and a resort like AABANA — older, watersports-branded, positioned steps from the boat launch — sits squarely inside that pattern rather than apart from it. It’s worth knowing, too, that the reef supporting all of this boat traffic carries real pressure: Monad Shoal is a protected area precisely because unregulated diving damaged its cleaning stations before rangers and mooring lines went in, and thresher shark sightings there have grown less consistent in recent seasons as a result. None of that changes what AABANA offers day to day — a straightforward, beachfront base for divers on a budget — but it’s the honest backdrop behind every boat that leaves this stretch of sand before sunrise.
