Guide to 1730 Jesuit House Museum in Cebu, Philippines.

The 1730 Jesuit House sits in Parian, the old trading district that grew up around Cebu City’s Chinese mestizo merchant community during the Spanish colonial period — one of the oldest continuously settled urban quarters in the Philippines. The house carries its date in a carving on the coral stone wall, and the structure blends the bahay-na-bato format common across the colonial Philippines with the stone-and-hardwood construction Jesuit builders favored at the time. What survives today functions as a small museum, with the original walls and several period furnishings still in place.

  • Coral stone walls and heavy hardwood framing are original to the 1730 construction, not later additions.
  • The ‘1730’ carving on the coral stone wall marks the building’s origin and is worth looking for on the way in.
  • Parian’s surrounding streets carry other Chinese-mestizo trading-era buildings worth a short walk before or after the visit.
