Overview
The building now housing Museo Sugbo began as Cebu’s provincial jail, designed in 1869 by Domingo de Escondrillas and built starting around 1871 in coral stone reportedly salvaged from the demolished Parian church — a direct material link between two of Cebu’s Spanish-era structures, one torn down to help build the other. The complex functioned as a detention facility for well over a century before the Cebu Provincial Government converted it into a history museum, opening its first four galleries on August 5, 2008.
The permanent collection runs from pre-colonial Cebu through the Spanish and American periods, the Philippine Revolution and World War II, with recurring figures including Rajah Humabon, Ferdinand Magellan and Miguel López de Legazpi. The original prison wings, stone corridors and courtyards remain part of the visitor route rather than having been demolished for the conversion — the building’s former function as a jail is legible throughout, not disguised behind museum fit-out.

M.J. Cuenco Avenue, Barangay Tejero, Cebu City.

What to Expect
A former jail whose institutional bones — cell wings, thick perimeter walls, stone corridors — are left visible rather than concealed, giving the museum a harder architectural character than Cebu’s ancestral-house museums nearby.
