Jacob’s Ladder is a stone stairway in Argao, built from coral stone during the town’s Spanish colonial period to connect the lower district to the higher ground above. Argao kept more of its colonial-era plaza complex intact than most southern Cebu towns — the nearby San Miguel Arcangel Church, a Baroque structure declared a National Cultural Treasure, is part of the same historic core. The town is also known regionally for torta, a dense, egg-yolk-heavy sponge cake baked in clay ovens, worth seeking out on the same trip.
- The staircase is built entirely of coral stone, a material used widely in Spanish-era construction across Cebu because it was locally quarried and easy to cut.
- Early morning or late afternoon light works best for photos, when the stone takes on a warmer tone.
- Combine the visit with Argao’s town plaza and church complex, and pick up torta from one of the local bakeries while there.
