Samboan Heritage District

Samboan’s heritage district runs along the coastal road at the southern end of Cebu, where Spanish-era stone construction survived in denser concentration than in most southern Cebu towns: ancestral houses, a coral-stone church, and a watchtower built to spot Moro raiders working this stretch of coast before firearms made the threat obsolete. Coral block was the standard building material for churches and forts across the Visayas through the Spanish period — cut from reef limestone, set in lime mortar — which is why so many of these structures outlasted storms that would have leveled timber construction. Fishing and copra remain the backbone of Samboan’s economy outside the heritage stretch itself, which keeps the district from feeling staged for visitors.

• Jacob’s Ladder: a 147-step stone staircase cut into the hillside for coastal lookout access — the climb rewards you with an open view over the strait.
• St. Michael the Archangel Parish: the district’s coral-stone church, worth a look at the wall thickness up close, a giveaway for pre-reinforced-concrete construction.
• Campanario de Samboan: the old watchtower, one of a chain built along this coast for the same reason — early warning against raiders working the channel.
