Michel's Garden

Michel’s Garden is a flora walking trail inside Cebu Safari and Adventure Park in Carmen, built around the personal orchid collection of Michel J. Lhuillier, the park’s founder — forty years of cultivation before any of it opened to paying visitors. Where the rest of the park works in imported animals and manufactured spectacle, this zone reads differently: it’s a private hobby that scaled into a public attraction rather than an exhibit designed from scratch for tourists, and the pacing shows it. Paths run through flowering beds, fern groupings, and shaded walking sections laid out for a slow pass rather than a single photo stop.

The garden’s existence says something about how the park itself got built. Lhuillier is better known in Cebu for the M. Lhuillier Group of Companies and its pawnshop and remittance chain than for horticulture, and a personal orchid collection large enough to anchor a named zone inside a 170-hectare wildlife park is the kind of thing that only gets built by someone with both the land and the capital to indulge a decades-long hobby at scale. It’s a pattern that repeats across the property — the White Lion Safari’s imported lions, the African Savanna’s transplanted grazers, and here, an orchid collection that outgrew a private garden and became a stop on a paid visitor route. Whether that reads as generous or self-monumentalizing probably depends on how much stock a visitor puts in a founder naming a garden after himself, but the plants don’t need the backstory to be worth the walk.

Orchids in particular reward a slow pace: most species only show color for a few weeks a year, and a collection built up over four decades will have plants at different points in that cycle depending on when a visitor comes through, so no two visits look quite the same.

• Walk the paths in the order they’re laid out rather than cutting across — the sections are planted to be seen in sequence, moving from one grouping to the next rather than scattered for browsing.
• Birds are common in the quieter corners in the early morning, worth a slow pass if you’re carrying binoculars or a camera — some of the same aviary species scattered through the rest of the park’s grounds tend to drift into the garden’s cover once the crowds thin near opening time.
• Go early. Shade cover is limited in parts of the garden, and the sun gets hard on the exposed paths well before midday in Carmen’s inland heat.

It’s a quieter counterpoint to the rest of Cebu Safari and Adventure Park rather than a detour from it — worth folding into a full-day visit alongside the African Savanna and White Lion Safari zones, timed for whichever stretch of the day the wildlife circuits are most crowded. Visitors chasing a single dramatic photo will get more out of the zipline or the predator zone; visitors who want a slow, ground-level break in the middle of a long park day will get more out of this one.
