Sumilon Lagoon

Guide to Sumilon Lagoon in Cebu, Philippines.

Type: sightEntrance fee: FreeHours: Open dailyBest time: Morning or Late Afternoon

Sumilon Lagoon sits off Sumilon Island, at the southern tip of Cebu near Oslob, where a marine sanctuary and a sandbar that reshapes with the tide draw much of the same crowd that comes for the whale sharks nearby. The water runs from deep cobalt past the reef drop-off to pale turquoise over the shallows — swim, snorkel, or cross the sandbar at low tide, when it’s widest and most photogenic.

Sumilon’s no-take marine reserve dates to the 1970s, established with Silliman University’s marine lab as one of the country’s earliest community-managed sanctuaries, a model later replicated across the Visayas. Entrance and boat-transfer fees, collected by the resort operating the island, typically fund the reserve’s ranger patrols.

  • Snorkel the protected sanctuary for coral cover and reef fish harder to find on open coastline.
  • Cross the sandbar at low tide — it narrows or disappears entirely at high water.
  • Arrive early, ahead of the day-tour boats out of Oslob and Moalboal.
