Quartel Beach takes its name from the old Spanish quartel, or barracks, that once stood on this stretch of Oslob’s coastline — part of the same defensive network as the Baluarte watchtower nearby, built to spot Moro raiders working this coast before firearms changed the calculus. The barracks ruins sit steps from the sand, low coral-stone walls now more foundation than structure, with the beach itself calm enough for kayaking or paddleboarding at low tide. Oslob’s economy shifted hard toward tourism after the whale shark watching operation opened in Barangay Tan-awan around 2011, a few kilometers south of here — Quartel doesn’t get that traffic, which keeps it quieter than the town’s main draw.

  • The barracks ruins are worth a slow walk before you swim — the coral-stone wall sections still show the original construction.
  • Low tide is best for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding; check conditions before renting gear, since the calm water depends on tide stage.
  • If you’re coming from the whale shark site in Tan-awan, Quartel is a short drive north — a quieter stop to close out the day.
