Boljoon’s heritage district centers on the Patrocinio de Maria Church, one of the coral-stone churches Augustinian friars built along Cebu’s southeast coast in the 18th century, when Spain fortified this stretch specifically against Moro raiding fleets from the south. The adjoining watchtower, or baluarte, was functional defense infrastructure rather than decoration — a lookout post positioned to spot raiders early enough for the town to take shelter. Walking the district today means reading that history in the fabric itself: coral-block walls, buttresses added later as the structure aged, and a bell tower set for sightlines down the coast rather than symmetry.
- Look closely at the coral-block masonry and buttressing — the repairs and additions tell you as much as the original construction does.
- The parish museum holds artifacts from the colonial period, worth the short visit if it’s open.
- The watchtower grounds give a clear view down the coast — the same sightline the original lookouts relied on.
