Patrocinio de Maria Church anchors the Boljoon poblacion on Cebu’s southern coast, its coral-stone walls standing since the Spanish colonial period as one of the more complete church complexes to survive from that era. The grounds keep a convento and a baluarte — a coastal watchtower — a defensive pairing common to Spanish-era parishes along south Cebu’s shoreline, where lookouts were built to spot Moro raiders approaching by sea. That combination of church, convent and watchtower is part of why Boljoon carries National Cultural Treasure status. Inside, the nave keeps its original pulpit and wooden retablo, carved and gilded work that has come down without major restoration.
- The pulpit and altarpieces are original, not reproductions — look for tool marks and joinery rather than a museum-polish finish.
- A small site museum holds items recovered from archaeological digs on the grounds, worth the extra ten minutes if it’s open.
- Mass schedules take priority over sightseeing; plan a visit around services rather than during them.
