San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish serves one of Cebu City’s oldest districts — San Nicolas was its own town before it was folded into Cebu City in the early twentieth century, and the parish predates that merger by centuries. It sits a few streets from Carbon Market, the city’s oldest and largest public market, in a part of downtown that still runs on trade more than tourism. The church carries Jubilee status for the Catholic Church’s 2025 Holy Year, Pilgrims of Hope, so visitors who complete confession, Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions here can receive a plenary indulgence through the year — reason enough to route a Carbon Market visit past the church rather than the other way around.
