Mt. Manunggal holds a fixed place in Philippine history: President Ramon Magsaysay’s plane went down here in March 1957, killing him and nearly everyone aboard. A memorial marks the crash site partway up the mountain and draws its own separate stream of visitors — people making a quieter, more specific stop rather than hiking for the view. The slopes above were logged heavily through much of the last century; what stands now is largely regrowth, part of an ongoing reforestation effort visible in the mix of native and fast-growing species along the upper trail.
- Historical Monument: The crash site memorial sits below the main summit — budget extra time if you want both the monument and the peak.
- Camping Under the Stars: Pitch a tent at the top for a sunrise that catches the eastern ridgelines first.
- Trail Conditions: Paths turn slick in the rainy months; footwear matters more than pace on the way down.
