Montaneza Falls sits in the interior hills of Alegria, reached by a trail that cuts through forest before the sound of falling water gives the destination away. The falls drop into a natural pool deep enough for a swim, framed by rock walls that stay damp and mossy year-round. The falls belong to the same limestone belt running through much of south Cebu’s interior — the geology behind the caves and sinkholes found throughout Alegria and neighboring Malabuyoc. The terrain here is steep and largely uncultivated, one reason the forest cover has stayed intact while lowland areas nearby were cleared for farming generations ago.
- Wear shoes with real grip — the approach trail turns to clay after rain and stays that way for hours.
- Water volume swings hard with the season; expect a fuller, more forceful falls from June through November.
- The pool at the base runs cold and deep enough for a proper swim, not just a wade.
