Montañeza Falls

Montaneza Falls sits in Barangay Montañeza, in the interior hills of Malabuyoc rather than neighboring Alegria — an easy mix-up given how close the two municipalities sit along this stretch of southwestern Cebu, and one worth clearing up before planning a route. The falls drop roughly 30 meters, making it the tallest and most visited of the waterfalls clustered around this part of Malabuyoc, reached by a trail that climbs over rock outcrops and past several smaller cascades before the main drop comes into view. Getting there typically takes about 45 minutes on foot, passing three smaller falls along the way rather than heading straight to the main attraction — which turns the hike itself into part of the experience rather than a means to an end.

The site has become genuinely popular for canyoneering, distinct from the rope-and-harness circuits further along the coast at Kawasan and Kanlaob. Montaneza’s particular draw is a run of seven connected waterfalls and drops in sequence, where the rock’s natural holes and ledges let adventure-minded visitors rappel, slide, or jump their way down instead of taking the standard trail back out. It’s a rougher, less commercialized version of canyoneering than the packaged tours sold out of Badian — fewer safety lines, less signage, and correspondingly more reliance on hiring someone who genuinely knows the route.

The falls belong to the same limestone belt running through much of south Cebu’s interior — the geology behind the caves and sinkholes found throughout Malabuyoc and neighboring Alegria, and the reason water this far from the coast still runs clear and cold rather than silty. The terrain around Montaneza stays steep and largely uncultivated, one reason the forest cover here has held up while lowland areas nearby were cleared for farming generations ago; canyoneering guides and conservation-minded barangay officials both have a stake in keeping it that way, since eroded slopes and cleared canopy would change the water flow that makes the falls worth visiting at all.

Montaneza sits close enough to Mainit Hot Springs, Malabuyoc’s other signature natural attraction, that most visitors treat the two as a single day trip — a cold-water waterfall hike followed by a soak in the warm mineral pools a short walk away. That pairing has become one of Malabuyoc’s more reliable sources of outside income in a municipality still built primarily on rice, corn, root-crop farming, and fishing; tourism here supplements rather than replaces the older agricultural economy, which is part of why development around the falls themselves has stayed modest.
