Mantalongon sits in the uplands of Dalaguete, cool enough that the vegetables grown here don’t grow at sea level: cabbage, carrots, bell pepper, lettuce — the produce Cebu City’s markets rely on when the coastal lowlands are too hot to grow it. Locals call the barangay the province’s vegetable basket; the wholesale market here, a bagsakan trading post, moves tens of tons of produce a day, with Thursday the busiest trading morning and a pre-dawn 4–6am window when coastal buyers come up to bid.
The terraces themselves are the visual payoff — hillsides cut into planting steps that climb toward misted peaks, Osmeña Peak among them, which uses Mantalongon as its usual jump-off point.
- Walk the market itself before the trail — vendors sell direct, and prices beat anything in the city.
- Time a visit for Thursday morning if the trading floor itself is the draw, not just the scenery.
- Continue on to Osmeña Peak from here if you want the hike as well as the market.
