Carcar’s poblacion holds one of southern Cebu’s most intact stretches of Spanish- and American-era ancestral houses — bahay na bato construction, coral-stone ground floors built for storage, timber upper floors built for living, still standing along the main streets around St. Catherine of Alexandria Church. This is a street of houses rather than a single restored showpiece, which is what makes the walk worth the time: the wood carving on window frames and door panels, and the range of facade colors, differ house to house. Pair the walk with Carcar’s own lechon, sold with a drippings-based sauce distinct from Cebu City’s version, and a stop at the public market for chicharon.

  • Look closely at the wood carving and facade colors on the ancestral houses lining the main streets — coral-stone-and-timber bahay na bato construction typical of the period.
  • The public market sells Carcar’s chicharon and other town specialties, a quick way to taste what the town is known for beyond its architecture.
  • The district is flat and walkable, so comfortable shoes cover most of what you need to prepare.
