The Cancalanog River runs through limestone hill country outside Alegria, in southwest Cebu’s karst belt — the same porous terrain that feeds the clear, spring-fed rivers and canyons the area is known for, Kabutongan and Kanlaob among them. The water holds its turquoise cast because it comes largely from underground springs rather than surface runoff, which is also why it stays cool through the middle of the day. Natural pools of varying depth sit along the course, shaded by forest canopy thick enough for a picnic out of direct sun.
- Swimming holes range from shallow, kid-friendly shelves to deeper pools suited to cliff jumping — check depth with a local guide before jumping, since levels shift after rain upstream.
- Forest cover along the banks keeps the site shaded most of the day, a contrast to how exposed much of south Cebu’s coastline is by comparison.
- Guides are usually hired through the barangay, as at most of south Cebu’s river sites — it’s the fastest way to find the clearest pools, and the fee stays local.
