Kabutongan Canyon

Guide to Kabutongan Canyon in Cebu, Philippines.

Type: sightEntrance fee: FreeHours: Open dailyBest time: Morning or Late Afternoon

Kabutongan Canyon cuts through the limestone interior of Malabuyoc, part of the same karst corridor that runs north through Alegria and Badian and produces most of southern Cebu’s canyoneering terrain — seasonal river flow carving through soft limestone rather than hard volcanic rock, which is why the walls here run narrow and the pools sit deep. The route works through rock formations, small waterfalls, and turquoise pools carved into the canyon floor, with a difficulty level that sits above the more heavily trafficked Kawasan circuit further south.

  • Expect narrow limestone passages and pool jumps — this is a guided canyoneering route, not a casual walk.
  • Hire a local guide. The southern Cebu canyoneering corridor runs on guide associations built around exactly this kind of terrain, and they know the current conditions.
  • Bring a waterproof camera case; the falls and pools are the payoff, but you’ll be in and out of water for most of the route.
