Sumilon Lighthouse

The lighthouse marks the southern tip of Sumilon Island, just off Oslob on Cebu’s southeast coast — an island best known in conservation circles as the site of the Philippines’ first marine protected area, established in the 1970s through research led by Silliman University biologists. The structure works as a navigational marker for the passage between Sumilon and mainland Cebu, and the short climb to it doubles as the island’s best vantage point over the reef and the sandbar that shifts with the tide below.

It doesn’t stand alone. Beside the lighthouse is a baluarte, a squat, two-story coral-stone watchtower now more than two centuries old, built as part of a chain of coastal defenses the Augustinian priest Julian Bermejo organized along southern Cebu’s coast in the early 1800s to warn towns of incoming Moro raiders. That older structure was built for lookout, not light — a garrison post scanning the horizon for raiding boats in an era when southern Cebu’s coastal towns lived under real threat of coastal slaving raids. The lighthouse that stands next to it belongs to a later, calmer purpose: guiding shipping traffic safely through the Sumilon passage rather than watching for attackers, a shift in function that traces the same stretch of shoreline through two very different periods of Philippine coastal history.

Both structures sit inside a small protected tree park on the island’s south end, which is part of why the walk up feels more like cutting through low forest than climbing a bare headland. The vantage point at the top looks out over the reef edge that the 1974 marine sanctuary protects and, tide depending, the sandbar that forms and reshapes on the shallows below — one of the few spots on the island where the watchtower’s military history, the lighthouse’s maritime function, and the modern conservation story are all visible from the same patch of ground.

Maintenance of the lighthouse itself falls to Philippine maritime authorities, who keep it operating as a working aid to navigation rather than a museum piece — it still earns its keep guiding bangkas and small craft through the channel after dark, long after the watchtower beside it stopped scanning for raiders.

The baluarte’s coral-stone construction is worth a closer look for what it says about how these watchtowers were built along the whole southern Cebu coast: quarried reef limestone and coral blocks, the same material the island itself is made of, mortared into walls thick enough to withstand cannon fire and give defenders cover while they watched for approaching boats. Bermejo’s original network ran from Argao down through Oslob to Santander, and Sumilon’s tower is one of the smaller surviving links in that chain, overshadowed today by the larger fortified churches at Boljoon and Argao that anchored the same defense system on the mainland.

No entrance fee is charged specifically for the lighthouse and baluarte; both sit inside the general Sumilon Island area covered by the island’s conservation fee, so a stop here is normally folded into whatever sandbar or sanctuary trip a visitor has already booked rather than paid for separately.

• The trail up is short and manageable, more a walk than a hike, but there is little shade along the way.
• Low tide exposes the sandbar beneath the lighthouse point, worth timing a visit around for photos of it.
• The baluarte beside the lighthouse predates it by roughly a century — worth the extra few minutes to see both structures together.
• The surrounding marine sanctuary restricts fishing and anchoring in the waters just offshore.
