The lighthouse marks the southern tip of Sumilon Island, just off Oslob on Cebu’s southeast coast — an island best known in conservation circles as the site of the Philippines’ first marine protected area, established in the 1970s through research led by Silliman University biologists. The structure works as a navigational marker for the passage between Sumilon and mainland Cebu, and the short climb to it doubles as the island’s best vantage point over the reef and the sandbar that shifts with the tide below.
- The trail up is short and manageable, more a walk than a hike, but there is little shade along the way.
- Low tide exposes the sandbar beneath the lighthouse point, worth timing a visit around for photos of it.
- The surrounding marine sanctuary restricts fishing and anchoring in the waters just offshore.
