Barangay Sulsogan

Sulsogan sits among Cebu City’s upland barangays, part of the hill country that also holds watershed forest supplying much of the metro area’s water — reforestation and catchment protection are an ongoing concern here, not just scenery. The trailhead opens onto a network of paths along the fringe of the Central Cebu Protected Landscape, running from shaded forest cover into open ridgeline with the city and harbor visible on a clear day.

The Central Cebu Protected Landscape covers a substantial stretch of the mountain range behind the city, and its main practical function for the roughly 2.5-million-person metro below is water: the forest cover here feeds the watershed that Metro Cebu depends on for a meaningful share of its supply. That’s part of why trail use is managed rather than open-ended — cutting new paths or straying off marked routes works against catchment protection in a way that isn’t obvious from the ridge itself.

Upland barangays like Sulsogan get comparatively little direct economic benefit from the city’s coastal tourism and BPO economy, which is why hiking and guiding income matters more here than it would closer to IT Park or the Business Park. Guides who know the trail network are typically residents of the barangay itself, and hiring one is less about difficulty of the terrain than about supporting one of the few tourism income streams available this far from the coast.

Much of this hill country was more heavily logged and farmed before conservation status took hold, a pattern repeated across the ridge system north and west of the city — Bocaue Peak and Campo 7 both sit within the same general watershed belt. The forest visible from Sulsogan’s ridgeline today is largely regrowth rather than untouched original cover, which doesn’t make the protection effort less important, just more recent than a first glance at the tree line suggests.

There’s minimal food infrastructure directly at the trailhead itself, which keeps the visit closer to a working hike than a destination outing — visitors typically plan a meal before heading up or after coming back down into the city rather than expecting anything on the trail. That absence of commercial development is itself part of the watershed’s protected character: less built infrastructure on the ridge means less runoff and disturbance feeding into the catchment below.
