Mt. Mauyog

Mt. Mauyog rises in Cebu’s central highlands, its jagged rock formations visible above the treeline well before the summit. The trail climbs through cooler, mist-prone terrain typical of the province’s interior ridge system — a real temperature drop from the coast, and part of the draw for hikers escaping Cebu City’s heat. This highland belt also carries some of the few farms in Cebu cool enough for vegetable crops that won’t grow on the coastal flats, supplying lowland markets rather than staying purely for tourism.

• The trail is steep and rocky in sections — sturdy boots and a reasonable fitness base matter more here than on flatter coastal walks.
• Several highland peaks and waterfalls sit within range of Mt. Mauyog, making it easy to combine into a full-day highland circuit.
• A local guide is worth hiring: the rock formations and trail junctions aren’t always marked, and guiding here is usually barangay-run rather than a formal outfit.
