Manipis Road climbs out of the Cebu City side of the mountain spine and drops toward Toledo on the west coast, one of a handful of routes that cross the island’s central highlands rather than following the coastal ring roads. The road itself does the work here — tight switchbacks, steep grades, and limestone cliff faces close enough to the shoulder that riders take the curves at half the speed of the flats below.
- Viewpoints along the way open up over the valley on clear mornings, before cloud cover typically rolls in by midday.
- The road surface and visibility change fast in this terrain — check conditions before riding, especially after rain.
- Small roadside stalls sell local produce and cooked food at a few of the wider pull-offs, useful stops on a longer ride.
Cebu’s central mountain spine is one of the more deforested landscapes in the Visayas — old-growth forest cover across the island has been reduced to a small fraction of what it once was, mostly cleared for farming and charcoal over the past century. Roads like this one cut directly through what’s left of it, part of why the drive still reads as wild despite running through a heavily settled island.
