Hilutungan sits off Cordova, one of several barangay-managed marine sanctuaries strung along the channel between Mactan and Olango — Nalusuan is the better-known neighbor. The reef here is a protected no-take zone, and the coral cover has held up better than open-water sites nearby precisely because access runs through guided snorkeling and diving trips rather than casual beach entry. Visibility is clearest in the dry months, when the channel current slows and the coral formations are easiest to make out from the surface.
- Bring your own snorkel gear if you have it — rental sets at the boat stops are serviceable but not always well maintained.
- Book through an island-hopping operator that includes Hilutungan as a stop; independent boat access is limited.
- Don’t touch or stand on the coral. Local stewardship is what keeps this sanctuary healthier than the open-water sites around it, and careless contact undoes years of recovery.
