North Cebu is the island’s beach-and-island quarter — the stretch from Danao City at the metro’s northern edge up to the tip at Daanbantayan — and the primary jump-off for the province’s best island-hopping. It trades the heritage and diving of the south for flat white-sand beaches, a renowned dive, and a slower coastal pace: a region travellers come to for turquoise water and expansive horizons rather than a single headline sight. The whole quarter is arranged along the northbound highway from the Cebu North Bus Terminal, with ferry ports at Hagnaya and Maya linking it to the offshore islands.
The three island draws define it. Bantayan Island, off the northwest tip via the Hagnaya ferry in San Remigio, is the flat-white-sand beach holiday, anchored by Santa Fe and the quieter Madridejos. Malapascua Island, off the northeast tip via the Maya port in Daanbantayan, is the thresher-shark dive at Monad Shoal. And the Camotes Islands — San Francisco, Poro, Tudela, and remote Pilar — sit out in the Camotes Sea, reached by ferry from Danao. Between them, the mainland towns — Bogo City, Medellin, Carmen, Catmon, Sogod, Tabogon, and the quiet west coast at Tabuelan and Tuburan — fill out the region.
North Cebu suits beach travellers, divers, and island-hoppers who want to disconnect on white sand or dive the thresher sharks. It doesn’t suit anyone trying to pair it with the far south in one short trip — the island is long, and the north is a direction to commit to.
What’s here, briefly
- Bantayan Island — the flat white-sand beach island (Santa Fe, Madridejos), via the Hagnaya ferry.
- Malapascua Island — the thresher-shark dive at Monad Shoal, via the Maya port in Daanbantayan.
- Camotes Islands — the quiet island group (San Francisco, Poro, Tudela, Pilar), via the Danao ferry.
- Bogo City and the northern towns — the service hub and the coastal municipalities up to the tip.
- The northern ports — Hagnaya (for Bantayan) and Maya (for Malapascua), the region’s island gateways.

How to get to North Cebu
From the Cebu North Bus Terminal
The region is reached by bus from the Cebu North Bus Terminal in Metro Cebu, up the northbound highway. The two island gateways are ferry ports along the way: Hagnaya in San Remigio for the Bantayan crossing, and Maya in Daanbantayan for the Malapascua boat. For the Camotes, the ferry runs from Danao City on the eastern seaboard.
Getting around
The mainland towns string along the highway; the islands are a bus-plus-ferry combination. On the islands themselves, a rented motorbike is the standard way to get around. Book Malapascua boat transfers early in the peak diving months.
What to do in North Cebu
The beach islands
Bantayan Island is the region’s beach holiday — long white sand, shallow water, and fresh seafood, based in Santa Fe, with the fort-and-sunset tip at Madridejos. The Camotes Islands are the quieter alternative — Lake Danao, Santiago Bay, and the caves, spread across San Francisco and Poro.
The thresher-shark dive
Malapascua Island, off the northeast tip past Daanbantayan, is one of the few reliable places in the world to see thresher sharks, on the dawn dives at Monad Shoal — the region’s signature underwater draw.
The mainland coast
Between the islands, the northern mainland has its own stops: the service hub of Bogo City, the sugar-and-island town of Medellin, the Cebu Safari park at Carmen, and the quiet coves of Tabogon and Catmon.
Where to stay in North Cebu
Most travellers base on the island they came for — Bantayan for a beach holiday, Malapascua for diving, or the Camotes for quiet. For the region’s supply, see the best beach resorts in Bantayan or the best dive resorts in Malapascua.
Practical realities
Payment: cash. Card acceptance thins on the islands and in the far-north towns; withdraw in the metro or Bogo before heading out.
Connectivity: workable in the towns and at the resorts; patchier on the outer islands.
Timing: the December–May dry window brings the calmest seas for the island crossings; the June–October wet months make the boat trips rougher. Book Malapascua transfers early in peak season.
Note: parts of the north were affected by the 30 September 2025 earthquake (Bogo and San Remigio hardest hit) — confirm current conditions for those towns before travel.
Other places to consider
- Bantayan Island, Malapascua Island, and the Camotes Islands — the three island draws of the north.
- Daanbantayan and San Remigio — the island-gateway towns (Maya and Hagnaya ports).
- Bogo City — the northern service hub and component city.
- Metro Cebu — the base and the origin of the northern bus run.
- Cebu Island — the province overview and how the north fits the wider island.
