Overview

The Marian Monks of Eucharistic Adoration, a religious order originally from Pampanga, completed the Simala Shrine in the hills of Lindogon, Sibonga, in 1998. The complex reads from a distance as a European castle — turreted towers, a grand exterior stair — and the interior ceiling carries murals whose composition is often compared to the Sistine Chapel, though on a far smaller and more recent scale. The image at the center of devotion, a statue of the Blessed Virgin under a canopy known locally as Our Lady of Lindogon, was originally a Our Lady of Fatima image donated by an American, Terry Brooks; its reputation as miraculous grew after reports the statue “wept” on several occasions, most recently cited for September 2016, and after healing claims tied to a 1998 dengue outbreak in the area.

The shrine includes an Altar of Wishes, where visitors leave written petitions and light candles — a devotional practice rather than a paid service; entry to the shrine itself is free.

Location

Barangay Lindogon, Sibonga municipality, southeast Cebu, in the hill country above the coastal highway.

Getting There

By van or private vehicle from Cebu City (roughly 1.5–2 hours) or as a stop on a south Cebu day tour; Sibonga town proper is the nearest transport hub, with a short uphill ride to the shrine itself.

Practical Info

  • No entrance fee; donations are welcomed for shrine upkeep.
  • Modest dress expected, consistent with an active pilgrimage site.
  • Weekends draw the heaviest crowds, particularly for scheduled Masses.

What to Expect

A large, still-active pilgrimage complex rather than a static monument — devotees visit specifically to pray at the Altar of Wishes, and the atmosphere reflects an operating shrine, candles, petitions and all, more than a heritage site being toured.
