Shell Island

Guide to Shell Island in Cebu, Philippines.

Shell Island is a small islet in the Mactan Channel off Lapu-Lapu City, usually visited as one stop on a multi-island boat tour rather than a standalone destination. It takes its name from what collects on its shoreline — an unusual density of shells for an islet this size, which makes it a stop of choice for beachcombers more than swimmers. The city around it carries its own name from Lapu-Lapu, the datu who defeated Ferdinand Magellan’s forces at the Battle of Mactan in 1521, a history that predates the shellcraft and guitar-making trades the wider Mactan area is better known for today.

  • Search the shoreline for shells — density is higher here than on most nearby islets, though it varies with season and tide.
  • Pack your own food and shade; the island has no permanent structures, so a picnic here means bringing everything in and out.
  • Bring snorkeling gear — the water just offshore is clear enough for reef viewing without a separate boat trip.
