Punta Engaño Beach

Guide to Punta Engaño Beach in Cebu, Philippines.

Type: beachEntrance fee: FreeHours: Open dailyBest time: Morning or Late Afternoon

Punta Engaño occupies the eastern tip of Mactan Island, the same stretch of coast where Lapu-Lapu’s forces defeated Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition on April 27, 1521 — a battle now marked by the Liberty Shrine and Mactan Shrine a short walk from the beach. The beach faces the Hilutungan Channel, a stretch of water busy with outrigger boats running snorkeling and island-hopping trips to the marine sanctuaries scattered through it.

  • Gateway to Island Hopping: Charter a local outrigger for snorkeling runs to nearby marine sanctuaries — most boatmen work out of the public beach access points rather than resort desks.
  • Resort Coast, Public Access: Large beachfront resorts line much of Punta Engaño, but public beach pockets between them still give free access to the water.
  • Sunrises: The beach faces east across the channel, making it one of the more reliable sunrise spots on Mactan.
