Overview
At about 1,013 metres, Osmeña Peak is generally cited as the highest point on Cebu Island. It takes its name from Sergio Osmeña, the Cebuano who served as Philippine president from 1944 to 1946. The hike itself is short by mountain standards — 15 to 20 minutes along a narrow, rocky path through thin forest and farmland, then a final steep scramble of about 50 metres to the summit — which is why it draws hikers of very mixed experience levels rather than only serious trekkers. What makes the summit distinctive is the terrain around it: a run of sharp, grass-covered limestone hills that has drawn repeated comparison to Bohol’s Chocolate Hills, though on jagged rather than rounded profiles and at higher elevation.
A trail and environmental fee, commonly cited around PHP 150 per hiker, includes a mandatory guide; some sources describe entry as free with only a minimal local-government maintenance charge, so the figure is worth confirming at the Mantalongon trailhead rather than assumed in advance. Camping at the summit area is available separately for around PHP 50 with a hiker’s own tent and gear.
Location
Above Barangay Mantalongon, Dalaguete municipality, southeast Cebu highlands.
Getting There
By van or bus from Cebu City to Mantalongon (roughly 2.5–3 hours), then a short habal-habal or tricycle to the trailhead; many overnight in Mantalongon or Argao to reach the summit before sunrise.
Practical Info
- Closed-in shoes are recommended for the final scramble.
- A guide is mandatory and typically bundled into the trail fee.
- Pack a light jacket — the ridge is noticeably cooler than the coast.
What to Expect
A short, steep climb rewarded with an open ridge-line view over jagged grass hills toward the coast on a clear morning; crowding is heaviest at sunrise on weekends.
