Olango Island Dive Sites

Olango Island (Cebu), five kilometres east of Mactan between the Bohol Strait and Camotes Sea, has very accessible dive sites along its fringing reefs — a recognised excursion from northern Bohol.

Type: dive-siteBest time: Best dive operation periods: March-June and September-December

Overview

Olango Island lies five kilometres east of Mactan Island, between the Bohol Strait to the south and the Camotes Sea to the north, at 10°16′N, 124°03′E. It is administratively part of Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu — not Bohol — but is commonly booked as a dive excursion from northern Bohol ports. The island sits within 4,482 hectares of reef flat, lagoon, sandy beach, rocky shoreline, seagrass beds, coral reefs, mangrove forests, and salt marsh, with continuous fringing reefs encircling its six islets: steep walls on the west side, sloping reef on the east.

Olango ranks among the most extensive reef areas in Central Visayas. Dive conditions range from beginner to advanced depending on current, with the best operating windows running March–June and September–December. Water stays at 26–30°C year-round, so a 3–5 mm wetsuit is standard kit, and visibility runs 20–40 metres.

Location

Olango Island, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. 15–30 minutes from Mactan-Cebu International Airport and Cebu City by boat. From northern Bohol (Getafe, Talibon, Tubigon), the island is accessible by ferry or banca transfer via Mactan.

There is no direct ferry from Bohol to Olango — the route runs via Cebu City or a northern Bohol port to Cebu, then a road transfer to Mactan and a banca crossing to Olango. As of 2026, OceanJet runs Cebu City–Getafe (northern Bohol) fast craft in about 1 hour 15 minutes (fares roughly ₱450–800), and Cebu City–Tagbilaran in about 2 hours (roughly ₱800–1,200). Slower RORO/ferry options to Tubigon run around 2 hours. Confirm current schedules directly with operators before travel, as routes and frequency change.

Getting There

From Mactan Island, native outrigger boats (banca) take 15–20 minutes to reach most Olango dive sites. From Cebu City, 15–30 minutes to Mactan, then the banca transfer. From northern Bohol, the route goes to Cebu or Mactan first, then on to Olango.

Many resorts along the Mactan coast facing Olango offer organised dive trips, equipment rental, dive training, and guides.

Visibility up to 100 ft over drop-off; turbid near shore. Currents strong but more predictable. Beginners with divemaster acceptable. Snorkelling possible on reef flat.

Southern tip site — Fringing reef from 5–22 m; known for corals and fish diversity. Clear water, good visibility.

Gilutongan Sanctuary (Kontiki side) — Opposite Gilutongan Sanctuary, 10 km south of Olango, under 30 min from Kontiki by boat. Best coral health in the Olango area. Average 15 m, max 30 m. Low current (~1 knot) — suitable for beginners. Turtles and blue-spotted stingrays recorded.

Nalusuan Seamount (submerged island) — Centre of Olango Channel, east of Lassuan Islet. GPS required; site is underwater. 45–50 min by banca from Mactan. Average 100 ft, max 165 ft. Open-water dive with fierce currents — experienced divers only, small groups, minimal equipment. Underwater mountain rises to within 30 m of surface; stony corals, soft corals, whip corals, sponges, pelagics.

What to Expect

The western reef edge, facing Gilutongan Channel, carries the densest fish population and the best coral gardens. The eastern side has stronger coral formations and more game fish, but the currents run harder and it’s recommended for experienced divers only. Most sites drop off starting at 10 m and descend to 30–40 m, with caves and overhangs at several points. Shark sightings — hammerhead, thresher, and whale sharks — are documented at the northern sites.
