Overview
Mactan Island sits in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu province — not Bohol. It appears in this collection because divers based in northern Bohol routinely cross by ferry to reach it, and the site data is worth recording for that trip. The diving itself is well established: a cluster of sites runs along the island’s eastern shoreline facing Olango Island, following a near-vertical wall-and-drop-off profile from about 10 metres down to 30–40 metres. Diving holds up year-round, with the clearest water from March to June and September to December.
Location
Mactan Island, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. Five established dive sites line the eastern shoreline facing Olango Island. The better sites cluster toward the south and the far north, away from the resort and jet-ski traffic that fills the central stretch. Engaño Point marks the island’s northern tip; Amboucuan Point marks the mid-point where the coast turns toward Marigondon in the south.
Getting There
From northern Bohol towns such as Talibon or Bien Unido, cross by ferry or fast craft to Cebu City or Mactan, then continue to Lapu-Lapu City. No ferry runs directly from Bohol to Mactan — every route lands at Cebu City or a nearby Cebu port, adding a 30–45 minute road transfer across the Mactan-Cebu bridges. As of 2026, OceanJet runs Cebu City–Tagbilaran in about two hours (roughly ₱800–1,200) and a separate Cebu City–Getafe route in about 1 hour 15 minutes (roughly ₱450–800); RORO operators such as Lite Ferries cover Tagbilaran or Tubigon in two to four hours at lower fares. Schedules and operators shift, so confirm departures before travel. Most Mactan resorts run their own dive packages with boat transfers included, and individual sites are typically a 10–20 minute outrigger ride from the resort dock.
Practical Info
- Diving available year-round
- Best conditions: March–June and September–December
- Nearly every Mactan resort offers diving tours, training, and gear rental or sale
- Some sites carry strong, unpredictable currents — confirm suitability before booking as a beginner
- A dive master must accompany inexperienced divers at the rougher sites
What to Expect
The dive sites follow a consistent wall-and-drop-off profile.
Hilutungan Channel, reached by outrigger from Amboucuan Point toward Marigondon (10–15 minutes), averages 30 metres with a maximum of 55 metres and visibility to 24 metres. Currents run strong — not a beginner site.
Marigondon Cave sits between Amboucuan Point and Marigondon. The wall opening drops from 5 to 40 metres, and the cave system runs roughly 70 metres deep with side pockets; a torch is required past 25 metres of penetration. Divers who switch off their lights at that depth see flashlight fish flare with bioluminescence.
Agus Reef, north of the cave, is a hard-coral wall holding lionfish, moray eels, sea cucumber, soldierfish, pipefish, and sea snakes — calm enough for beginners, varied enough to hold an advanced diver’s attention.
Kontiki, further north, slopes to 10 metres before dropping to 50. Coral, sponges, and sea stars crowd the 6-metre shelf; fish diversity picks up below 40 metres. Regarded as one of Mactan’s stronger sites and recommended for novices.
Tambuli, off Tambuli Beach Resort (5–15 minutes by outrigger), averages 20 metres with a 35-metre maximum and calm water carrying some current. Coral gardens hold small reef fish, sea cucumbers, sea stars, urchins, and nudibranchs, with visibility to 20 metres. At 21 metres the slope levels onto a shelf where the fish are used to hand-feeding — a spot for macro photography.
Gilutongan Channel, at Mactan’s northern tip facing Olango, holds dense coral over a sandy bottom to about 18 metres, with strong invertebrate diversity including frogfish — a favoured stop for underwater photographers.
Sites beyond the central resort strip, north or south, turn up larger pelagic species alongside coral gardens, caves, and overhangs.

Olango Island Dive Sites
Olango Island (Cebu), five kilometres east of Mactan between the Bohol Strait and Camotes Sea, has very accessible dive sites along its fringing reefs — a recognised excursion from northern Bohol.
- Other Mactan Island Dive Sites — Additional Mactan (Cebu) dive sites offer drop-offs from ~10 m to 30–40 m with pelagics, coral gardens and caves; surges and strong currents mean novices should dive with a divemaster.
