Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza carries a title with a long Spanish lineage: Our Lady of the Pillar is the patroness of Zaragoza, Spain, one of the older Marian devotions in Catholic tradition, and the name traveled to Barili with the friars who evangelized this stretch of Cebu’s coast during the Spanish colonial period. Barili itself is one of the region’s rice-farming towns, more agricultural than touristic outside this run of southwest coast beaches, and the church remains the town’s actual civic center rather than a heritage stop built for visitors.
- The altar and interior woodwork show the ornamentation typical of the period, worth a slow look before or after mass.
- Parishioners are generally open to sharing the church’s history if you ask; this is a working parish, not a guided-tour operation.
- Dress modestly. Services run on the regular schedule, and visitors are expected to respect that.
