The uplands here grow a modest amount of local coffee, mostly robusta with some arabica at the higher elevations, and the view — a wide stretch of highland ridgeline dropping toward the coast — is the actual draw, with the coffee as a reason to stay a while.

Cebu’s upland coffee history goes back further than the current wave of roadside cafes suggests. Highland barangays across the island’s spine grew coffee commercially going back generations, before a mix of coffee rust disease, aging trees, and the postwar shift toward corn and other crops let much of that acreage lapse. What’s growing around Luka today is closer to a revival than a survivor — small-holder plots replanted or maintained by families who never fully abandoned the crop, now finding a market in the day-trip traffic that didn’t exist a decade ago.

The Oslob whale shark boom and the wider popularity of the Kawasan canyoneering route changed that calculus, routing a steady stream of day-trippers through upland roads that used to see mostly local jeepneys and habal-habal traffic. Luka and the handful of similar stops nearby are a small, direct example of how a single high-profile attraction on the coast can pull income into inland barangays that have nothing to do with it directly.

None of this is a large operation. These are modest setups — a covered seating area, a simple menu, coffee grown within sight of where it’s served — and the appeal is proportional: a break in the drive, a view, and a cup of coffee that didn’t travel far to get to you, not a destination in its own right.

Treat it as a stop, not a plan. Nobody drives up from the coast for Luka alone — it works as the midpoint pause on a longer loop that includes Oslob’s coastal attractions and, for many visitors, the Kawasan canyoneering run further north. Timing it for the drive back down, in the hour before sunset, gets you the best light on the ridgeline and a coffee before the winding descent, rather than trying to fit it in on the way up when everyone’s focused on reaching the coast on schedule.
