Capitancillo Island

Guide to Capitancillo Island in Cebu, Philippines.

Type: sightEntrance fee: FreeHours: Open dailyBest time: Morning or Late Afternoon

Capitancillo Islet sits well off the north Cebu coast, closer to open Visayan Sea than to any mainland town, with a lighthouse marking what is otherwise a low sandbar and reef. The surrounding reef is a marine sanctuary, one of the protected sites along Cebu’s north coast where diving and fishing are managed separately from the open reefs nearby — a designation that’s part of why visibility and fish life here hold up better than at unprotected reefs closer to the mainland. Getting here means a boat trip out of Bogo or Medellin, which keeps day-trip numbers lower than at Cebu’s closer island stops.

  • Diving and snorkeling here benefit from the sanctuary status — expect better fish density and coral cover than most north Cebu reefs.
  • Shade is limited outside the lighthouse structure, so sun protection matters more here than at a typical beach stop.
  • Boat access is from Bogo or Medellin — factor the crossing time into your day.
