Metro Manila, officially the National Capital Region (NCR), is the seat of government and the primary economic hub of the Philippines. It is located on the eastern shore of Manila Bay in southwestern Luzon. Comprising 16 highly urbanized cities (including the City of Manila, Makati, Quezon City, and Taguig) and one independent municipality (Pateros), it is one of the most densely populated metropolitan areas in the world. NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport), the country’s main international gateway, is located here. For most international visitors to the Visayas, Manila serves solely as a transit hub.
