Eastern Visayas: The Samar-Leyte Frontier

Eastern Visayas (Region VIII) covers Samar, Leyte, and Biliran — it forms the eastern edge of the archipelago, facing the open Pacific.

Eastern Visayas (Region VIII) comprises three main islands — Samar, Leyte, and Biliran — forming the easternmost boundary of the Visayas, facing the Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Tacloban City on Leyte is the regional centre. The region’s geography makes it the first point of contact for many Pacific typhoons (most notably Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda in 2013). The San Juanico Bridge connects the two primary islands. The region is linguistically divided: Waray is spoken in Samar and eastern Leyte, while Cebuano is spoken in western and southern Leyte.
