Talima Marine Sanctuary

Guide to Talima Marine Sanctuary in Cebu, Philippines.

Type: wildlife-sanctuaryEntrance fee: FreeHours: Open dailyBest time: Morning or Late Afternoon

Talima Marine Sanctuary sits off Lapu-Lapu City on Mactan, one of the barangay-managed no-take zones that dot the island’s coastline as a counterweight to decades of reclamation and resort development along the shore. Inside the protected boundary, coral cover and fish density hold up noticeably better than the open water around it — the ordinary payoff of keeping fishing and anchoring out for long enough. Snorkelers and divers work the same shallow reef here, close enough to shore that a boat isn’t strictly necessary depending on tide and entry point.

  • Sergeant major schools are a near-guaranteed sight; sea turtles show up often enough to be a realistic hope rather than a long shot.
  • Rent gear locally rather than pack it — operators near the sanctuary keep reasonably maintained sets, and it supports the small businesses built around the reef.
  • Skip reef-toxic sunscreen; a sanctuary this size has less buffer against runoff than a larger reef system would.
